That’s where we come in.
Our Chattanooga family law attorneys can assist you with the following matters:
- Divorce
- Legal separation
- Alimony and temporary alimony (pendente lite)

- Child support
- LGBTQ families and domestic partnerships
- State and federal appeals
- Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements
In addition to these matters, we provide dedicated support for family law mediation in Chattanooga as a constructive alternative to courtroom litigation. Mediation is a structured process involving a neutral third party—the mediator—who guides both sides in openly discussing their concerns and finding mutually agreeable solutions. Mediation can be an excellent option for families in Hamilton County, where the courts frequently promote this collaborative resolution before proceeding to trial. By working with a family law mediation attorney in Chattanooga, you retain control over key decisions, lower the risk of protracted disputes, and promote a more cooperative atmosphere that can help preserve vital family relationships. Our attorneys can guide you through every stage of the mediation process while safeguarding your rights and interests based on Tennessee law.
The Mediation Process for Family Law in Chattanooga, TN
Those considering family law mediation in Chattanooga should understand the unique local process. Mediation is typically led by a neutral, Rule 31-listed mediator—someone who has fulfilled the specific training and registration requirements set forth by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Typically, both parties will either agree to participate in mediation or may be ordered to do so by a Hamilton County judge. Sessions generally take place in a confidential and neutral environment, where parties are encouraged to focus on problem-solving and reaching practical, voluntary agreements. The mediator’s role is to help facilitate communication and understanding, not to impose decisions—giving each party a voice in the final outcome.
Our team of family law mediation lawyers in Chattanooga helps clients prepare thoroughly for every mediation session, identifying priorities, gathering relevant documents, and clarifying each party’s objectives. During mediation, we deliver steady support and clear advice, ensuring every proposal is legally sound and aligned with your best interests. When agreements are reached, our attorneys draft documents to present them for court approval—making them enforceable under Tennessee law. Throughout the process, Speek, Turner & Newkirk PLLC strives to foster positive dialogue and outcomes that reflect your family’s needs. Our familiarity with mediation in locations such as the Chattanooga Family Justice Center and awareness of Hamilton County procedures ensures a seamless and supportive experience from start to finish.
Common Mistakes When Dealing With Family Law Issues
Family law cases can be both complicated and emotionally charged. Below are common mistakes people often make when addressing their family law matters:
- Failing to hire a knowledgeable attorney: Relying on incomplete or poor legal advice, or trying to handle matters alone, can jeopardize your rights and result in unfair outcomes.
- Ignoring financial documentation: Neglecting financial records, or failing to disclose assets and debts, can cause imbalanced property division or support arrangements.
- Overlooking the importance of parenting plans: Inadequate or unclear parenting plans can perpetuate conflict and create uncertainty for children.
- Letting emotions drive decisions: Allowing emotions such as anger or resentment to guide actions can cloud judgment and prolong disputes.
- Underestimating the impact of social media: Making negative comments or oversharing on social media can become evidence and impact proceedings.
- Ignoring legal deadlines: Missing key dates or filing deadlines can mean losing important legal rights or incurring costs.
- Not considering future needs: Focusing only on short-term issues without accounting for future changes can create problems down the road.
It’s crucial for parties in Chattanooga to recognize the additional complexities created by local court protocols and Tennessee’s unique legal requirements. For instance, court filings such as parenting plans or mediation agreements must adhere to specific guidelines set forth by the Hamilton County Chancery and Circuit Courts. Failing to follow local requirements or consult a seasoned family law mediation lawyer in Chattanooga often leads to unnecessary complications. At Speek, Turner & Newkirk PLLC, we leverage extensive experience in local family law courts to help clients avoid procedural setbacks and address both current and future needs. Proactively partnering with a knowledgeable legal team can help lay a solid foundation for constructive, long-term solutions in any family law case.

By far Mr Speek is the best attorney in Chattanooga. I highly recommend his expertise to anyone . Mr Speek is a very prestigious gentleman and really cares about his clients. Anytime I had a question his amazing staff was very prompt in getting an answer. Very sweet , polite and knowledgeable girls that work in the office as well. Walking in to hire a lawyer for me was very humiliating and uncomfortable. As soon as I walked in the office I felt very welcome and at ease. Mr Speek is very loyal to his clients and you can tell that he sincerely cares. Also a very known respected attorney . I can’t thank Mr Speek enough for all his help . Bill Speek. An angel sent from above. Truly a miracle worker. If I could give 20 stars, I would. Tell me how this man dropped 9 felony charges in just 5 minutes?!! Seriously can’t wrap my head around it. Don’t waste your time even looking for another lawyer.- Anika E.

I want to give a ten stars but google has 1-5 stars. Jonathan Turner was my lawyer and my case and it's over and my dui (2nd) got totally dismissed. We went to court many times and it always got pushed forward to another day. We dealt with blood test result and inconsistent and retesting. Covid was also a big factor in my case being extended for months and months. Different DA"s, not a good deal on the table and other factors included in my case. In the end,,, absolutely a ten on the stars rating from me. Dismissed..... I recommend Jonathan and his group highly. Thank you Jonathan so very much!!! Thank you again!!!- Dale J.
-
They are always willing to go the extra mile for every one of their clients.- Madeline Y.

Trust me, if you need a drug lawyer, he is the best. I don't know what I would have done without you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.- Eric K.
